When the worm is executed, it creates the following copies of itself:
  • %Windir%\EXPLORAR.exe
  • %Windir%\NETSVC.EXE
  • %Windir%\NETUI.exe
  • %Windir%\WINVER.exe
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\WINSTART.exe
  • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\WINSTART.exe

Next, it creates the following files:
  • [CURRENT FOLDER]\Windows Explorer.url
  • c:\a.txt
  • c:\msg.txt

The worm then attempts to delete files and folders found at the following location:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs

It then creates the following registry entries so that the worm runs when Windows is started:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\"Microsoft Net Driver" = "%Windir%\NETSVC.exe"
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\"load" = "%Windir%\NETUI.EXE"

It creates the following registry entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WinNT\"ID" = "[CURRENT DATE IN FORMAT OF DD/MM/YYYY]"

The worm sets the following registry entry to disable the task manager:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\"DisableTaskMgr" = "1"

It also modifies the following registry entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon\"Shell" = "Explorer.exe %Windir%\WINVER.EXE"

The worm may open the file c:\msg.txt in notepad. The file contains the following:

*** I M P O R T A N T M E S S A G E ***
------------------------------------------
ALL DATA [REMOVED] on your computer
------------------ SORRY ------------------
* tHe pIrAcY kIllEr *

It then attempts to overwrite or delete files and folders found on network and removable drives.
It also copies the file c:\msg.txt to [DRIVE LETTER]:\Piracy.txt on drives where it deleted files.

The worm attempts to propagate by copying itself to all removable and network shares using the following filename:
[DRIVE LETTER]:\Mobimb.exe

It also creates the following file on all removable and network shares so that the worm may be executed when the drive is opened:
[DRIVE LETTER]:\autorun.inf

The autorun.inf file contains the following:
[AutoRun]
open=mobimb.exe
shell\open\Command=mobimb.exe
shell\open\Default=1
shell\explore\Command=mobimb.exe

Recommendations

Symantec Security Response encourages all users and administrators to adhere to the following basic security "best practices":

  • Turn off and remove unneeded services. By default, many operating systems install auxiliary services that are not critical, such as an FTP server, telnet, and a Web server. These services are avenues of attack. If they are removed, blended threats have less avenues of attack and you have fewer services to maintain through patch updates.
  • If a blended threat exploits one or more network services, disable, or block access to, those services until a patch is applied.
  • Always keep your patch levels up-to-date, especially on computers that host public services and are accessible through the firewall, such as HTTP, FTP, mail, and DNS services (for example, all Windows-based computers should have the current Service Pack installed.). Additionally, please apply any security updates that are mentioned in this writeup, in trusted Security Bulletins, or on vendor Web sites.
  • Enforce a password policy. Complex passwords make it difficult to crack password files on compromised computers. This helps to prevent or limit damage when a computer is compromised.
  • Configure your email server to block or remove email that contains file attachments that are commonly used to spread viruses, such as .vbs, .bat, .exe, .pif and .scr files.
  • Isolate infected computers quickly to prevent further compromising your organization. Perform a forensic analysis and restore the computers using trusted media.
  • Train employees not to open attachments unless they are expecting them. Also, do not execute software that is downloaded from the Internet unless it has been scanned for viruses. Simply visiting a compromised Web site can cause infection if certain browser vulnerabilities are not patched.

5. Exit registry editor .
6.delete the IE temp files or you may download ATF temp files cleaner to run a full cleaning.and restart the computer.
