For remove W32.Imaut.E virus, please clean/delete all W32.Imaut.E infected files and Delete/Modify any values W32.Imaut.E added to the registry as following:
When the worm is executed, it searches for the following file on the compromised computer:
C:\Install.txt

If the above file is not present on the compromised computer, the worm creates the following files:

  • %Windir%\gphone.exe
  • %System%\gphone.exe
  • %System%\DEFAULT_NOT_SET.exe
  • %System%\autorun.ini
  • %System%\setting.ini
  • %Temp%\log_[TIME AND DATE].txt

The worm may also create one of the following files on Windows Vista:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\gphone.exe
  • %Temp%\gphone.exe
  • %System%\gphone.exe

The worm runs the following command so that it executes everyday:
AT 09:00 /interactive /EVERY:m,t,w,th,f,s,su %SYSTEM%\gphone.exe

It then creates the following file:
%Windir%\Tasks\At1.job

The worm then searches the computer for the following file:
C:\disk.txt

If the above file is not present on the computer, it copies itself to the following locations:
  • %DriveLetter%\New Folder.exe
  • %DriveLetter%\gphone.exe
  • %DriveLetter%\autorun.inf

The worm then searches the following registry subkey for available network shares:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\WorkgroupCrawler\Shares

It then copies itself to all available network shares as the following files:
  • [ROOT FOLDER]\New Folder.exe
  • [ROOT FOLDER]\gphone.exe
  • [ROOT FOLDER]\autorun.inf

The worm may then modify the following registry entry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\WorkgroupCrawler\Shares\"shared" = "[ROOT FOLDER]\New Folder.exe"

Next, it creates the following registry entries so that it executes whenever Windows starts:
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\"Yahoo Messengger" = "%System%\gphone.exe"
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\"Shell" = "Explorer.exe gphone.exe"

It also creates the following registry entries:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Schedule\"AtTaskMaxHours" = "0"
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Schedule\"NextAtJobId" = "2"

The threat may then modify the following registry entries:
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\"DisableTaskMgr" = "1"
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\"DisableRegistryTools" = "1"
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\"NofolderOptions" = "1"
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\"Default_Page_URL" = "http://rnd009.googlepages.com/google.html"
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\"Default_Search_URL" = "http://rnd009.googlepages.com/google.html"
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\"Search Page" = "http://rnd009.googlepages.com/google.html"
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\"Start Page" = "http://rnd009.googlepages.com/google.html"
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\"Start Page" = "http://rnd009.googlepages.com/google.html"
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel\"HomePage" = "1"
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel\"HomePage" = "1"

It also deletes the following registry subkeys in order to disable certain security related programs from executing on startup:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\BkavFw
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\IEProtection

The worm closes any window that contains the following strings in its title:
  • game_y.exe
  • Bkav2006
  • System Configuration
  • Registry
  • [FireLion]
  • cmd.exe

Next, the worm contacts the following location in order to download updated versions of itself:

It then attempts to download files from the following location:

The worm attempts to spread through Google Talk instant messaging client.

It checks to see if Google Chat is running on the compromised computer. The worm searches through the contacts list in alphabetical order and sends one of the following messages:
  • There is in the worst of fortune the best of chances for a happy change
  • There is only one way to happiness and that is to cease worrying about things which are beyond the power of our will
  • The wisest mind has something yet to learn
  • The wise man in the storm prays God, not for safety from danger, but for deliverance from fear
  • Happiness is a choice that requires effort at times
  • Action may not always bring happiness; but there is no happiness without action
  • Happiness is not a destination. It is a method of life
  • The best way to cheer yourself up is to try to cheer somebody else up
  • If you want truly to understand something, try to change it
  • I am a strong believer in luck and I find the harder I work the more I have of it

It may also send the following message:
View my webcam (private) [LINK TO COPY OF THREAT]

The worm displays the following message, if Yahoo! Messenger is not present on the compromised computer:
Message:
Search result:
Yahoo Messenger is not installed on your machine
Going to install it

It then downloads and installs Yahoo! Messenger on the compromised computer.

Recommendations

Symantec Security Response encourages all users and administrators to adhere to the following basic security "best practices":

  • Use a firewall to block all incoming connections from the Internet to services that should not be publicly available. By default, you should deny all incoming connections and only allow services you explicitly want to offer to the outside world.
  • Enforce a password policy. Complex passwords make it difficult to crack password files on compromised computers. This helps to prevent or limit damage when a computer is compromised.
  • Ensure that programs and users of the computer use the lowest level of privileges necessary to complete a task. When prompted for a root or UAC password, ensure that the program asking for administration-level access is a legitimate application.
  • Disable AutoPlay to prevent the automatic launching of executable files on network and removable drives, and disconnect the drives when not required. If write access is not required, enable read-only mode if the option is available.
  • Turn off file sharing if not needed. If file sharing is required, use ACLs and password protection to limit access. Disable anonymous access to shared folders. Grant access only to user accounts with strong passwords to folders that must be shared.
  • Turn off and remove unnecessary services. By default, many operating systems install auxiliary services that are not critical. These services are avenues of attack. If they are removed, threats have less avenues of attack.
  • If a threat exploits one or more network services, disable, or block access to, those services until a patch is applied.
  • Always keep your patch levels up-to-date, especially on computers that host public services and are accessible through the firewall, such as HTTP, FTP, mail, and DNS services.
  • Configure your email server to block or remove email that contains file attachments that are commonly used to spread threats, such as .vbs, .bat, .exe, .pif and .scr files.
  • Isolate compromised computers quickly to prevent threats from spreading further. Perform a forensic analysis and restore the computers using trusted media.
  • Train employees not to open attachments unless they are expecting them. Also, do not execute software that is downloaded from the Internet unless it has been scanned for viruses. Simply visiting a compromised Web site can cause infection if certain browser vulnerabilities are not patched.
  • If Bluetooth is not required for mobile devices, it should be turned off. If you require its use, ensure that the device's visibility is set to "Hidden" so that it cannot be scanned by other Bluetooth devices. If device pairing must be used, ensure that all devices are set to "Unauthorized", requiring authorization for each connection request. Do not accept applications that are unsigned or sent from unknown sources.
  • For further information on the terms used in this document, please refer to the Security Response glossary.
